Terakoya (small private school)

The importance of literacy increased in the Edo period so that Terakoya (small private school) was introduced and became popular through the period. Tutors are mostly priests or village headman class, and instruct children about practical knowledge such as reading, writing and arithmetic. There had been many Terakoya in the city area.
